Time really seems to be flying by. I cannot believe we moved here when Wyatt was just 2 and now he is 6!!!!! I say every year that I am going to hold back and not go over the top with his birthday, it is a challenge for me, but I think this year was the perfect smallish celebration.
I have struggled a lot with wanting to celebrate and make Wyatt feel special without having him feel spoiled or entitled to things. This year when he asked about a party and all the gifts he would get we made a plan to scale things back so he didn't always expect such big production. I really do love to plan and have parties so it was hard to hold back. Wyatt said he would like a surprise party and his birthday was during our spring break so we decided to have a small party where he invited just a few friends over for a play date and then surprised them with it being a play date/birthday party. I think it was a win/win/win. I got to plan a little party (that I LOVE to do) without going crazy, Wyatt got to feel special and celebrate with his friends, and he got excited about giving them a surprise party instead of him getting a lot of things. When I asked about his yearly piñata and cake he said he wanted a lego theme. This is what we came up with. Wyatt made the piñata with me over spring break.
We played pin the lego head on the lego man and hide the lego man, but no pictures to show for it. Here is Wyatt with his cake. We actually had to move inside because the candles would not stay lit outside. There is a video worth watching at the end of the post. I put trick candles on his cake this year.
Owen enjoyed the cake too.

It was a nice celebration the day before his birthday.
Wyatt's actual birthday was on a Saturday. Rick was working nights so he missed our German pancake breakfast, but was home around 11 am.
Wyatt might have freaked out a little when he woke up and saw this on the window.
Just so I remember, this year Wyatt got a fishing pole, a fish bowl (not meant to be used together), a pocket RC car, an electronic lab kit, a flat green lego base, and an Alvin and the Chipmunks CD.
His dinner choice was parma rosa.
There was a lego brick cake left from the day before so we sang again.
Perhaps the highlight of the day for Wyatt was taking his birthday money from Grandma to the pet store to buy his two new betta fish, Red Fred and Blue Fins (you may be able to imagine what they look like). I need to take a picture of him with them. The love he has for these fish is intense, he tells people we have 7 people in our family now, I am already dreading the day they die. After he got them in their bowl he had me walk them around the house to give them a tour.
We are so lucky to have this 6 year old in our family.
