A New Look at Things

I feel that I should start off by saying that we are all happy, healthy, and overall better off because of the events I am about to blog.

About a week ago Wyatt started telling us that he was seeing a circle that no one else could see. At first I thought that he was making it up, but he really stuck to his story and I entered a mild stage of panic. I am a worrier and of course my thoughts immediately jumped to the conclusion that he had some sort of rare brain tumor that was affecting his vision and I made an appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist for their next available opening. We went in yesterday morning. Good news the circle was not really there, everything looked good as far as that went. He was given an eye test that honestly he did not do very well on. As we were heading to the waiting room to wait for his eyes to fully dilate the assistant secretly spelled to me that he would probably need glasses.

Probably was quite the understatement. Wyatt is farsighted, really farsighted. Most kids who need glasses at his age have a prescription of about a +3.00; Wyatt needs a +6.75 in both eyes. The doctor put lenses in front of my eyes to show me how Wyatt had been viewing the world his whole life and it made me cry. It made me pretty much feel like the worst mother in the entire world, how could I have not known?? Adding to the guilt, at Wyatt’s 4 year old well check up he didn’t pass the eye test in the pediatricians office and they recommended he see an ophthalmologist, which I logged in my mental to do list, but never did anything about. There is one more big parenting OOPS to add to the books.

Wyatt was pretty excited about getting glasses, Rick was around yesterday, and I had spent a couple hours on the phone trying to find the best deal so we were off on the hunt for Wyatt’s first pair of glasses. Kids glasses are hard; apparently Wyatt has a narrow face so they were all really wide. He ended up liking a pair that could be ready for him that same day. He picked his so they could look like mine (I know he really is the sweetest). I wish it had occurred to me to video him being given his glasses. It made me want to cry, but happy tears this time, his face lit up and as cliche as it sounds you really could tell that things were clear for the first time. It has been really fun and hard (knowing he hasn’t been able to see so many things) to watch him check out his new view of the world. My favorite observations so far have been him noticing petals on flowers at the mall, and then at dinner noticing that orange slices have lines on them.

Rick and I feel like we have been through all the stages of grief. I wear glasses (occasionally, but should all the time) and have never felt bad for myself, but there is something different when it is your child, you just want every experience they have in this life to be perfect. While I have been struggling with this way more than I probably should, Wyatt has been so ecstatic about his glasses! He had to ichat with both Grandmas last night so he could show them. He keeps saying prayers of thanks for his glasses, and that they will still be around and that he will be able to find them the next morning. He told me this morning that he had woken up in the middle on the night to say a prayer that preschool would not be cancelled because of snow so he could show his new glasses to his friends. So if you see Wyatt in the near future you know what he will want to talk to you about. Congratulations on your new glasses Wyatt, you are the best!

And now for some pics of the new specs!

Trying the right pair on.
Owen didn't want to be left out so he tried some on too.
Wyatt getting his glasses.
He was all smiles!
I am still trying to figure out the whole flash/reflective thing. Any suggestions?
A couple more random ones from today.

Janae - your comments remind me so much of Holly's check up and first day with glasses. I, too, had no idea how much she couldn't see. She was so excited to see individual leaves on the trees instead of a blob of color. I am glad Wyatt is so excited for his glasses. He is very handsome!

Dear Wyatt -
I want to come back to CT and I want to play with you. I really like your glasses! Some day I will get new sunglasses for summer, since I lost them.

Wyatt looks so cool in his new glasses! Seems like this is how motherhood/parenthood goes- I don't think you should feel any guilt. I've always been impressed with how you handle your role as a mother- always taking it seriously-but still relaxed enough to enjoy it.

What a fun parenting story. Wyatt is so cute with his glasses. I had a brother that had to get them at that age too and he grew out of needed them but if Wyatt never does he sure looks cute and smart and those two qualities always please the ladies. Miss you guys.
