Road trip to DC-AAO style!

A few weeks ago we decided to crash the AAO like we did last year in Boston, this time it was in Washington DC. We drove down on Thursday night. We stopped just outside of NYC to caravan with the Lees and Owen took a turn at the wheel at the truck stop.

We actually had a big scare driving down. About an hour out of DC we were trying to make an exit and ended up spinning out on the ramp. I have never really felt like I was in a car that could flip over before, we were really lucky. It was a good thing that Rick was the one driving and we were in the Passat and not the Jeep. Both boys slept peacefully through the entire thing, I did enough freaking out for all of us.

On Friday we ventured out to the DC zoo. You would think that the highlight of the zoo would be seeing the giant panda bears, but instead it was the caterpillars Wyatt collected in a water bottle.

On the drive home from the zoo I had a bad parenting moment. Wyatt was holding his caterpillars named, Timmy and Amasha. He started to tell me his legs were itching from a caterpillar. I didn't think it was possible for a caterpillar to climb out of a water bottle so I pretty much ignored the claim. Then a couple minutes later I looked back and there was a caterpillar climbing up Wyatt's shorts. For those of you who know me well you know I am not a big fan of wildlife, especially when it comes to touching it. I grabbed the caterpillar off his leg then realized I had a caterpillar in my hand and immediately dropped it on the center console. I was freaking out and yelled to Rick to toss it out the window. Rick claims his judgment was clouded and he just moved out of conditioning to do whatever I say; the caterpillar was thrown out the window. From the back seat there was the scream of "TIMMY!!" This caterpillar has been greatly missed and we are still looking in our backyard for a replacement.
We spent a lot of time getting to know all the new babies: Isaac, Bethany, Caleb, and Owen (we met Jensen later).
The picture above is one of my favorites of Owen, and it doesn't hurt to have super cute Isaac in there too.

TWINS!!
On Saturday Callie was kind enough to show us around the town the day after her last law school final! Here we are in front of the star spangled banner in the American History Museum.
We ran into Teresa who was also in town for the AAO. That is Michelle Obama's inaugural dress. Other pictures are from the air space museum. Callie must be good luck because a woman came up to us and asked if Wyatt would like to make an airplane and if we would all like free lunch vouchers.
More air space museum, the Washington Monument, and the capital.
It was a hot day and Wyatt really enjoyed the fountain in front of the American History Museum.
After the museums we got to go meet Jensen, I am so bummed I didn't get any pictures with him because he is a real cutie. We went to dinner, Owen had a bit of an incident (Don't worry that is just spit up all over me).
Walking around Georgetown.
After Georgetown we walked the mall, here we are at Lincoln's memorial.
We had a great time with a lot of great friends, too bad next year we won't be able to make it to the Chicago meetings.

Your trip to DC sounds fun. We are going there in a week and a half. We are going to a wedding for John's nephew in West Orange, New Jersey. Then we will be back in DC for a while. Too bad we couldn't have been there at the same time. It looks like you had a great time with all your friends. Your boys are adorable. Don't feel too bad about Timmy, I would have reacted the same way.

I love reliving the trip through our blogs!! Soooo fun. That picture of Owen & Isaac is one of my absolute favorites too. I think they are BFFs. And I love the ones of you & Rick holding our twins! Ah, good times. Hooray for AAO!

PS I read the Timmy story to Jared and we both laughed. Apologies to Wyatt, but that's pretty funny.
