Wyatt's Surgery

Yesterday Wyatt had outpatient surgery. We woke him up at 6:00 am and headed up to UCLA. Wyatt was a great patient. Before the procedure he loved playing with the nurses and the neat bed they had set up for him. They let me go back with him while they put him under. This was a big mistake on my part! They put him under by forcing a mask over his face; as he was breathing in he gave me the saddest look, his eyes rolled back in his head, and he went limp. To be fair to the doctors they told me exactly what would happen, but I was not ready, they had me give him a kiss, lay him on the operating table, and leave the room. It lasted about an hour and ten minutes. I was fairly calm for the first hour since they told us that is how long it would be, but Rick will tell you I got a little anxious during the last ten minutes. I guess when babies wake up from general anesthesia they don’t know what is happening and they can’t open their eyes so they thrash around for a few minutes. Once Wyatt was able to open his eyes he saw his daddy took a big drink and fell asleep. If you look closely you can see it looks like he has black eyes from where they had to tape his eyes shut during the operation.

About 20 minutes later we woke him up they made sure that he drank more and sent us home about 10:00 am. Wyatt was a little bit groggy and tired the rest of the day, but he was happy and wanted to play. About 6:00 pm he started freaking out, when we checked the surgery site we found that the bandage was acting like a tourniquet and he was swelling, turning black and blue, and blistering (sorry for being so graphic). While we were waiting on the doctor to call us back we were able to get a neighbor to help Rick give him a blessing and he calmed down a few minutes later. We were told we may want to take him to the ER (we did end up driving to it), but things started to get better and we were able to get a hold of the doctor.

Today Wyatt is doing great! He has been playing and laughing all day. He really likes playing with his new stuffed Pluto, which was a present for him being so brave; he especially likes it when Pluto licks his face. He has only had pain medication once this morning and he hasn’t complained at all; he even went to the grocery store and an AC meeting with me. He has been extra cuddly and a little sleepy, but he is doing really well.

Awe...poor Wyatt. I got a little tear in my eye when I read this. You must have been walking the floors in the hospital. Then to have the bandage go haywire! He is such a brave boy.

Wyatt looked happy before the surgery, but very sleepy and sad after. He is such a trooper, and so are you Janae and Rick. We'll see you in a week, and I hope you are doing a lot better.

We're glad to hear that things are okay with Wyatt. We were thinking about him Tuesday. I talked to Rick yesterday and he said that Wyatt acted like he didn't even know he'd had surgery- I can only imagine what it must have been like to watch your child go under the anesthesia. You're both brave!
